What is a king?

Whenever there’s a large group of people, someone has to be in charge and make the rules.  In school, the teacher is in charge in the classroom.  In the old days, a king would be in charge and make the rules for everyone in the area where he lived.  He would make rules for adults and children.  His job was to make sure everyone who lived in his area was safe from enemies and could build houses, grow food, and have jobs.

What is a kingdom?

Parents get to make rules in their house.  Kings get to make rules for everyone in the area where they live.  The land where the king rules, including all the people in it, is called a kingdom.

Today most countries don't have kings or queens any more.  In many countries, a large group of people is chosen to make the rules instead of just one person.
