Let's look at some of the vocabulary used in the story from the Easy-to-Read Version of the Bible.
Calf
A young cow. The calf in this story is being killed in order to have a big meal for lots of people. Eating meat was not something people could afford to do every day at that time, so it would have been considered a special treat.
Famine
When an area is not producing enough food for the people who live there. People go hungry and some may die.
Pharisee
A group of people who wanted to practice the religion of Judaism in a way that was more conservative.
