Elijah and the Widow
Let's read the story of Elijah and the Widow and then ask some questions.
This story is written by Little Bible Teacher.
Elijah the Prophet
Once there was a prophet name Elijah. He lived during a time when there was no rain and little food in the land. He didn’t know where his next meal would come from.

The Ravens
So God said, “Go to a stream I know of, and the ravens will bring you food.” So Elijah went there and ravens brought him food in the morning and in the evening and he got water from the stream.

The Widow
But eventually the stream went dry because there was no rain. So God said, “I want you to leave this country and go to a small town near Sidon. You’ll meet a woman there who will take care of you.”
So Elijah went to the town and saw a woman picking up sticks. Elijah asked her for some water to drink and also some bread to eat.

Hunger in the Family
The woman said, “I only have enough flour to fit in my hand and a little olive oil. I was out here picking up sticks to make a fire and cook a final meal for my son and I. After that, we’ll go hungry.”
Elijah said, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and cook your food. But bring me some of the bread first and then make some for you and your son. God has told me that your container of flour won’t go empty and your pot of oil will always have oil in it.”

Food Provided by God
So the woman went home and did exactly what Elijah said. And Elijah, the woman, and her son always had enough food. The container of flour and the jug of oil never ran out.

Boy gets Sick
After a while, the son became sick. He got so sick that he stopped breathing. The woman blamed Elijah, thinking God or him caused the sickness as a punishment.

The Boy is Well
Elijah brought the boy downstairs and gave him to his mother. He said, “Your son is alive!”
The woman was grateful, and said, “Now I know you really are a man of God.”

Was Elijah obedient when God told him to do something?
What does it mean to be obedient to God?
Did Elijah have to trust God to bring him food from the ravens?
Did Elijah have to trust that God would provide food for him and the widow and her son?
How can we learn to trust God?
Did God make the boy sick or did God make the boy well?
When we pray to God, will he make us sick or make us well?
